Biography

I started my college education by earning two bachelors degrees, one in classical studies (ancient Latin and Greek language and history) and the other in business, with a concentration in information systems. The classical studies degree came out of my desire to read the Bible in the original languages and the business degree was for more practical reasons – like getting a job. :-) My exposure to programming and computers was something I really enjoyed, so I returned to get a third bachelors degree, in computer science.

For the next fifteen years I worked in the computer industry, mainly with local and wide area networks. During this time I earned multiple industry certifications, including Microsoft MCNE, Novell ECNE, Banyan CBS, and Compaq ASE.

I have studied and taught New Testament Greek for quite a number of years, both in churches and at the college level. Feel free to check out my "Learning New Testament Greek" website at www.ntgreek.org. (I love studying and teaching Greek; I currently tutor those learning Greek and read the Greek NT with others on a weekly basis. Let me know if you want to join us!)

Working with networks and doing technical support was also very satisfying; the technology provided a mental challenge and solving people’s computer problems (and providing them with business solutions) allowed me to make a positive impact on peoples’ lives.

My love and enthusiasm for learning naturally led me to a desire to teach. So, I went back to college to get some advanced degrees that would qualify me to teach at the college level. I started with a masters degree in theology and then with a masters degree in computer information systems. I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University, with a special concentration in computer security. For the last few years I have taught computer courses at various colleges and continue to do so while finishing my Ph.D.

I am currently an adjunct instructor for the Computer Information Systems department at the Online Campus of ECPI College of Technology, where I teach various networking and security courses. (www.ecpi.edu)
Teaching Philosophy

I believe that your learning is in your own hands. No one can make you learn; you have to want to learn. But even the desire to learn (or to earn a college degree) is not enough for learning to take place. We all have known people who talk big about learning and getting degrees, but never take the time to study; their dreams will remain just that, empty talk. My challenge to you is to translate that "desire to succeed" into daily and weekly choices, or better, into a daily routine.

I want to inspire you, encourage you, and motivate you to learn. I want to help you learn by providing you all the resources that you need for the material at hand. My goal is to present the material in a way that is the most understandable and provide clarification for any issues that may need more explanation. Furthermore I hope to relate my personal experiences to you as real world examples of the material we are discussing; this material is relevant to your present and future career.

I assume that you are a motivated person who wants to learn and will take control of your environment to make time to understand the material and to complete the requirements of the course. I expect a lot from you, but at the same time want to empower you to take your education into your own hands.

My Hobbies

My wife and I love the out-of-doors, including activities such as backpacking and bird-watching. A few summers ago I hiked over 100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in about 5 days (a challenge for me since I had not done serious backpacking in years!). A couple years ago my wife and I did a one day hike from the north to south rims of the Grand Canyon – 24 miles in one day! That summer we also did a backpacking trip in Yosemite, including a trip to the top of Half Dome – what a fantastic experience! We regularly visit Yosemite National Park whenever we can get time away from our other obligations; in 2005 spring the waterfalls were spectacular!

Corban offers a great opportunity for enjoying the out-of-doors, including hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, and various other activities. Please see the Westrek webpage at www.corban.edu/studentlife/westrek.

As I mentioned above, I love reading the Greek NT and enjoy tutoring those learning Greek. If you would like to read Greek together, let's do it! Check out my website at www.ntgreek.org.
