Washington, D.C.

The Washington MonumentWe're back "home" in D.C. now.  Today we decided to recover from last year's disaster at the National Holocaust Museum by getting in line early.  The weather was perfect and the line wasn't really that long, AND we got tickets for the group allowed in just 30 minutes later.  We easily filled that time and then went through the permanent exhibit.  There's really no way to describe the experience.  But we must never forget what happened.  This perhaps sums up the importance of this museum and our responsibility:

When they came for the communists, I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out;The Pentagon Flag
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews, I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.

From there we headed across the mall to the Museum of American History.  If it's happened in our history, they have some artifact to go with it.  Just as one example, the flag seen here is the flag that was lowered from the roof of the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks on that building.   We spent the entire afternoon going from one room to another.  Much more tomorrow!
